Things to do in Avalon, Catalina Island
In addition to being the most popular tourist destination on the Island, Avalon also offers a world of its own. It has very few cars, so visitors are likely to see Avalon from a golf cart, on foot or by boat. In addition to being clean and safe, Avalon offers a laid-back beach town that is chock full of restaurants, bars, and shops.
Getting around Catalina Island
The city of Avalon is about a mile square and everything is within walking distance. From the boat docks, called the mole by the islanders, it is just a five-minute walk into town. Besides walking or using golf carts, there are also cabs and shuttles available on the island. My favorite mode of transport is the freedom of the golf cart.

Crescent Beach a Trio of Coastal Charms
Crescent Beach comprises three distinct stretches of shoreline: South Beach, located south of the pier; Middle Beach, situated north of the pier; and Step Beach, farther north along the coast. All three beaches grace the tranquil waters of Avalon’s waterfront. While South and Middle Beaches offer reliable expanses of sand, they may be submerged during high tide. Step Beach, on the other hand, features a rocky shoreline that remains wet for the majority of the time. Behind each of these beaches, visitors can find a sand-covered terrace adorned with tall palm trees, providing inviting spots to sit and admire the scenic vistas.
During the summer months, these beaches, along with the waterfront restaurants and shops, attract bustling crowds. Lifeguards are stationed during this peak season, but it’s always wise to consult Avalon Bay’s water quality reports before taking a dip.
